| Highlights of METERINGChina 2009 Conference | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
As the full scale deployment of “Data Acquisition System of Electrical Power Consumers (or AMI)” launched by the State Power Grid Corp. of China (SGCC) is just underway, the topics of METERINGChina2009 conference were finely selected to cater for the implementation of China’s AMR/AMI systems. China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), State Electricity Regulatory Commission of P. R. China (SERC), SGCC, China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG) and other provincial-/city-level power grid companies as well as China's EPRI paid great attention and offered strong supports on this well-organized event by arranging speakers and sending delegates actively. Besides, we are also delighted to have local/international speakers and participants to share their advanced technologies and field experience together. The whole conference commenced with Mr. Howard SCOTT’s pre-event worldwide hot topic discussion: the evolution from AMR/AMI to smart metering, smart grid and smart utility, which was dedicated to unveil the latest development of the global metering industry to the audience. Following the pre-event session, keynote speeches were addressed by 4 VIP speakers in the opening ceremony. They addressed: China’s governmental policies on energy metering (Mr. LIU Xinmin); market development of China’s electric power (Mr. Sun Yaowei); China’s national standard of Multi-functional Watt-hour Meter Communication Protocol (Mr. ZONG Jianhua); and China’s interactive smart grid initiative (Mr. WU Jiandong) respectively. These keynotes are very vital to understand China’s macro metering market environment.
In the following sessions, the other 30 industrial leaders and experts from both utilities and leading suppliers also delivered valuable speeches on different topics, such as electricity metering market updates, metering-related innovation and application, PLC & Wireless AMR technologies and network topologies, AMR/AMI case study, meter data management (MDM), AMR/AMI global roll-out, as well as the development of smart grid and energy management, etc. From their speeches, participants not only obtained the profound knowledge related to technologies, but also enhanced their understanding of current market environment, including opportunities and challenges. For examples, Itron/Actaris, the global leading metering company, addressed the security issues of AMI system by launching products of Openway series; and Google also penetrated into smart grid industry by releasing online PowerMeter. Meanwhile, OSIsoft’s data management technology was also introduced and intended to handle the huge data in China’s smart grid projects. And the concept of China’s “SUPER” grid was interpreted by the expert from China EPRI Information Technology Institute, State Power Grid, etc. BPLC-based pilot AMR projects have been deployed in both SGCC and CSG, even in debate, industrial analysts believe that it is an aggressive plan in China power industry. |

In the exhibition hall, total 53 vendors showcased their latest products, systems and technologies. The displayed products ranged from meter components (such as metering chips, relays, CTs, batteries, wireless modules, PLC modules) to completed meter products, system solutions, management software, power quality monitoring equipments, standard meters, etc. Besides China’s local leading companies, more than half international leading companies were from Europe, America, Asia and Japan, Ocean Pacific areas etc.
Regarding the displayed products, some were really brand new in China, such as the concept of home display terminals from Toshiba, Itron’s Openway Metering Solution, low power consumption PLC solution from Watteco, NEC’s whole smart grid solution, etc. Meanwhile, OSIsoft, MAXIM-IC, Telegesis, Grinpal, Amplex also joined METERINGChina Exhibition for first time. All of these new suppliers attracted great attention from end customers and potential business partners. All participants believe that the exhibition is a great opportunity for them to share variety of perspectives and insights on different products and technologies. Three leading companies (Freescale, Cinterion, and SZ Xindao) also presented their featured technologies to delegates and visitors in the vendor briefing area. Meanwhile, co-located activities, Field Visits to Typical Projects of Wireless AMR System and BPLC-based Smart Grid Demo System, are also arranged by the organizer to offer unique value-added services to all the participants. These activities are more interactive and essential for participants to understand the application level of the AMR/AMI system project in China.
EXHIBITORS from China and International Metering Industries
In summary, the world is experiencing economic downturn, yet the global metering industry is still in a booming development as the investment on advanced metering projects is an effective and long-term way to stimulate the economy. Many Chinese and International Metering leading suppliers are also aware that this will be a great opportunity in the Metering market. Especially in China, SGCC just announced its development plan of strong smart grid and this initiative would create great business opportunities for vendors. |
